St James lost the toss and were asked to bowl in a 40 overs match.
Robin made the first breakthrough bowling the Wickham number two. However,
Baker, the other opener dealt severely with bad deliveries and Jack grabbed his
vital wicket with the score on 38 as Ryan took a fine catch staring straight at
the sun. The two Nabil’s took over the bowling and picked up the Wickham three,
four and five with solid bowling and a sensible run out by the senior Nabil.
Despite bowling an unhealthy number of wides, St James had done a great job of
keeping Wickham to 95-5 so far.
However Wickham’s two league players Spry and Wilson now began to run amok. Spry
had already played himself in with some sweet strokes through the leg side but
once he was settled he ran quick singles and then found then regularly found the
boundary with some powerful swipes. James, Dave Owen and Dave the skipper all
toiled away as the field retreated to the boundary. Not even Nabil Muneer’s
catch off Dave Owen’s bowling to remove
Latteman the Wickham captain joined Spry to hammer some more runs. After 34
overs he sportingly declared on 220-6 leaving Spry on 99 not out.
After a fantastic tea Ed and Dave headed to the middle to reply with 46 overs to
play with. Dave fell to a good delivery early but Dave Owen and Ed hit some good
looking drives and lofted shots to take us to 38-1 before Dave unfortunately got
a leading edge and was caught.
19 before Ed chipped to mid off for 29. Jack added a
further 31 with
looked very fluent, smashing a glorious square cut off
Jack fell to a top edge off a mighty looking pull and Nabil Shiraz sadly played
on to his stumps leaving St
James 99-5. However
Nabil Muneer hit some tasty looking boundaries before both fell caught behind
for 34 and 17 respectively. We were then all treated to the wonderful sight of
the Boyle brothers Ryan and James batting together. Ryan had already smacked the
spinners around before James joined in the fun with a beautiful six over mid
wicket. Ryan was eventually bowled for 30 and sadly James was run out the next
over for 17. Chris was the last man out leg before as St James fell for 170.
Despite the loss there was a happy vibe to the team after a very encouraging
batting performance, full of good partnerships and eye catching shots. A
friendly opposition, delightful ground and a delicious tea all added to a fine
day.
